Chapter Seventeen

Al offered Briar and Sleuth a ride home in his vehicle with Crosby.

‘Well—that was a hair-raising experience. I can’t believe Sleuth found her,’ said Briar with an emotional tremble in his voice.

Al fastened his seatbelt and looked over his shoulder at the notorious dog who lay his head on Briar’s lap.

‘You and Peter had your part to play in her rescue. If you both hadn’t responded to Sleuth the way you did, I don’t think she would be alive much longer. According to the paramedic, she wouldn’t have lasted more than a few days as her water bottle was empty,’ said Crosby with a warm smile.

Briar shuddered at his words and cuddled Sleuth all the way home while Al said very little.

That evening, the rescue was all over the news. Tearful, Briar phoned Elly to tell her the breath-taking experience she had watched unfold.

‘You and Peter are famous now for finding her. It’s a miracle—our prayers have been answered,’ Elly croaked, trying to hold it together.

While they chatted, Briar’s cell phone buzzed. She clicked on the text message which was from Al. He needed to talk to her urgently.

‘Sorry, Elly. Al, the detective wants to talk to me. I hope it’s not bad news about Sandy. I’ll get back to you. Would you mind phoning the hospital to find out where we can visit her? Peter is there, but he hasn’t phoned yet.’

After Briar finished her call to Elly, she phoned Al who said he needed to come around to discuss a few things that could have an impact on her safety. They agreed to meet first thing in the morning on her half-day off.

‘Come on in,’ she said to the tall, sun-tanned man in his expensive-looking sunhat and khaki trousers, while she looked at his ring finger and noticed no wedding ring.

‘Sorry to arrive so early—I’ve got a pile of reports waiting for me on my desk. It’s only a temporary office where I’m working from at the local station here.’

Briar offered him iced tea which she knew he was partial to. ‘I’ve made toast—have you eaten?’

‘Thanks, but I had an early breakfast. The friend I’m staying with near here is a trained chef so I’m well-looked after. Anyway—let’s cut to the chase.’

‘Oh, sounds ominous,’ said Briar, munching on her toast and marmalade.’

‘We have reason to believe that Sandy was witness to the killing of the man, Manuel Santos whose body was washed up on Keyhole Rock.’

Briar sat aghast, rubbing her goose-pimpled forearms as Al told about the anonymous cartel member who had seen Sandy’s SOS signal.

‘He warned that his boss may come looking for her. He had seen the news about Sandy’s disappearance and was afraid that if it was her sending the signal, she may die.’

Briar shook her head sideways in disbelief. ‘It sounds as though he may know her, otherwise, why would he be so concerned?’

Al sat silent momentarily as though he contemplated whether he should open up too much to Briar.

‘I tend to agree with you which means we have another mystery to solve.
